These sketches are all inspired from the Friday Painters Group at the Victorian Artists Society studio.  I have used a range of pencils from 7H up to an 8B, layering to achieve various grey tones through to black.

I have used Art Spectrums Ultimate Drawing Pad paper for these sketches.  It is a good weight – 125 gsm, and very smooth.  I worked from images I took whilst in Italy last October around Stressa.

Charcoal Sketch

After being inspired by Juliette Aristides, I gave her technique a try today.  I think I would use a lighter toned paper next time as I felt that any white conte I place on the figure looked too pasty, so I ended up erasing most of the highlights.  Perhaps a light grey conte may have worked better here.  Firstly,  I rubbed shaved charcoal over the paper to start with, drew in the figure, built up my darks and erased the lights.  I like the roughness of the initial rub in on the background, usually I tend to be a little too neat.

Sketches from my travels

Whilst on a cruise ship recently, I had plenty of subjects around me.  Unfortuantely, they never stay still for long.  These sketches are not necessarily ‘alike’ portraits, however, I do try to capture a bit of their character.  I used an 0.05 fine liner for the majority of them.

Pen & Ink

I really enjoyed sketching this piece.  Having just returned from visiting Sri Lanka, my son also holidayed there a week later and took a photo of this man.  His eyes really captured a moment of soul searching and I couldn’t resist drawing him.  With my sons’ consent, I used his photo as a reference.

Pen 30x40cm

This pen sketch took me quite some time.  It is from my own photo taken on our trip to Sri Lanka in July.  I have used various pen sizes ranging from 0.03 to 0.5.
