Some sketches….

Using a 2H, HB and 2B pencil, these sketches were done in two 20 minute sittings.

These sketches are done with sepia water-coloured pencils (no water added).  I like the  Derwent Artist quality range.  They break less than the Studio quality, which seem to shatter more easily.

Painting in Progress….Hoi An cafe at night

Here are some stages of the painting I’m working on.

The first image is where I am at present with it, another few hours should see it finished.  The other images are in order of progress.   This work is done in oils on Belgium Linen on board.

I started by staining the white canvas with a golden yellow so I had an evening time glow underneath my oil sketch.  Mixing some darks, I mapped in my drawing, blocking in tonal & colour masses along the way.   I wipe back the lights on the bicycles with a rag and a little turpentine, adding the lights of the canvas, rather than adding white paint.   Not alot of detail at this stage and the paint is kept thin and dry (no medium).  This allows me to shift the paint around to correct proportions.  I use very little  or no white paint in the early stages, as it tends to lighten the darks that I need and becomes uncontrollable.

As the painting progresses, I start to break down the massed areas of tone/colour and render a bit more form into them by adding a brushstroke of a half tone.  I begin to add more white into my lighter colours and apply the paint thicker to create more brilliance and detail.

The colours I used are :  Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian Green, Australian Leaf Green Blue Shade, French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber and Ivory Black.

I just loved this subject when I saw it in Hoi An, Vietnam.  This town is full of lanterns and it’s magical to walk through the streets at night and see the life within the restaurants.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment.

Oil Painting

I just finished this painting and will enter it into the Camberwell Art Show 2011.  It is a subject I did nearly 20 years ago and wanted to revisit.
