The Antique Shop

Oil on Belgium Linen

This subject caught my eye in Den Haag (The Hague), Holland about a year ago, as I was walking past the shop.  I just loved the light streaming in to the shop from the courtyard beyond, the rich earthy red oriental urn in the corner and the chandeliers hanging overhead .  It was quite complicated to paint, but I hope I have suggested detail with my brush rather than painting too much detail in.  I finished this painting in the latter half of 2011 and am ready to exhibit it shortly.

This is one of my latest oil paintings, inspired from a shop in Edinburgh called “Armstrongs”.  When I entered the shop I was mesmerised by the colourful fabrics swirling overhead.   What caught my eye was a glimpse of a king’s cloak which I thought was a bit quirky, since the shop is literally at the back entrance of Edinburgh Castle.

There was just so much to look at, the people in it were nearly camoflaged amongst the displays.  I sneaked several photos which didn’t do justice to the sensations I’d had, so I arranged this composition using three of the images and took  liberties with colour, lighting and other incidentals.  I feel that I have captured the mood that I felt in the shop.  It was a really fun painting to do.
